Item Description

In 1987, Billy and Jimmy Lee punched their way through Technos Japan's arcade cabinet and helped define the belt-scrolling beat 'em up. Nearly four decades later, Double Dragon Revive brings the brothers back under Arc System Works, the fighting game specialist that now owns the series, with wrestling-game veterans Yuke's handling development under the supervision of staff from Arc System Works' fighting games. The goal is right there in the name: a modern 2.5D take on the classic left-to-right street brawl, built to be easy to pick up.

The brothers are up against the Shadow Warriors gang once more, and familiar arcade faces such as Abobo and Roper return as fully 3D bruisers. The combat is built on normal attacks, special attacks and a Hyper Blow, with juggles and wall bounces to stretch a combo, and a Finishing Blow as the one move tied to a limited resource. Many enemies carry super armor and guard-breaking attacks, so mashing gets you nowhere; reading patterns and timing your hits is the whole game. Stages are dotted with gimmicks to smash thugs into, weapons are scattered for the taking, and there are four characters to choose from: Billy and Jimmy from the start, plus the fast, combo-hungry Marian and the ninja Ranzo as unlockables. Co-op play is part of the design, so you can split the brawling with a partner.

Critics were divided on Revive, but the hits land with a satisfying crunch and the arcade structure keeps runs short and replayable. The Collector's Edition was the premium physical release of the game, which makes it the version for series devotees who want the Lee brothers' latest comeback alongside the originals.
