Item Description

Here is a fact that surprises a lot of Double Dragon fans: the Game Boy's Double Dragon II has nothing to do with the arcade and NES game that shares its name. Technos built it from one of its Japanese Kunio-kun brawlers, Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun: Bangai Rantō Hen, then reworked the characters and story around the Lee brothers for its Western release, and the result is a handheld beat 'em up with an identity all its own.

This time the fight is personal. The Scorpions gang has the Lee brothers in its sights, and Billy has to punch his way through their ranks, stage after stage, all the way to the gang's leadership. Combat is simpler and snappier than the arcade games: chain punches and kicks together, grab thugs for a beating, and keep the pressure on anyone foolish enough to stay down, the kind of scrappy, close-quarters brawling the Kunio-kun games were known for.

The standout feature is co-op. Link two Game Boys with a cable and a second player can join as Jimmy Lee, which on a 1991 handheld felt like carrying the arcade cabinet around in your backpack. The game has a scrappier, more street-level flavor than its namesake, a direct inheritance from the Kunio-kun series that also gave the world River City Ransom.

For collectors, that tangled family tree is the real draw. It is a Double Dragon game and a Kunio-kun game at the same time, an unusual piece of Technos history and a fascinating find for collectors tracking down every portable adventure of Billy and Jimmy.
