Item Description

Few arcade games defined the street-brawler genre like Double Dragon, and Technos' own Game Boy version proved the formula could survive on a tiny green screen. Billy Lee is back on the streets to rescue Marian from the Black Warriors gang, and the fight comes to you in a compact, punchy package that still plays remarkably well in short bursts.

It is not a straight port. The game borrows its feel and its enemy lineup from the NES version, but every level has been redesigned for the handheld, and there is one welcome change: Billy has his full arsenal of moves from the very first stage instead of unlocking them through the NES game's experience system. That means punches, kicks, throws and the rest of Billy's repertoire are yours to play with right away, which keeps the pace brisk and makes each encounter a little more improvisational. Familiar faces return with fresh tricks, since hulking Abobo and the martial artist Chin both picked up new techniques for this version. The campaign builds to a showdown with Willy, the boss of the Black Warriors.

There is also a two-player versus mode for linked Game Boys, pitting the Lee brothers against each other, a fun echo of the NES version's head-to-head mode. The music carries the series' unmistakable themes in chiptune form, and the sprites are large and readable for an early Game Boy release.

It has kept a reputation as one of the better beat 'em ups on the original Game Boy. For Double Dragon fans it is a fascinating sibling to the NES version: the same world and the same villains, rearranged into a new set of stages built for the portable.

About the game

A 2D fighting game adaptation for GameBoy of the original arcade Double Dragon released in 1987. This version features gameplay similar to the NES version, but with completely different level designs and all of the main character's moves available from the start. The enemies are the same as the NES version, but some of the characters such as Abobo and Chin were given new techniques. The main game mode is still single player, although the game ends after the fight with Willy, with Jimmy not appearing in the main game.
