Item Description

Doom has always told you to keep moving. Doom: The Dark Ages tells you to plant your feet, raise a shield and meet the charge head-on. A prequel to Doom (2016), it drops the Doom Slayer into a medieval war on Argent D'Nur, a world of castles, siege engines and towering demonic armies, and recasts him as a walking battering ram. id Software built it on its new id Tech 8 engine and Bethesda released it in 2025, and the result feels heavier, louder and more grounded than anything the modern series has tried before.

The new centerpiece is the Shield Saw. It blocks incoming fire, it can be hurled into a crowd like a buzzsaw, and it lets you parry the glowing projectiles demons fling at you, turning defense into a rhythm of block, counter and punish. Melee gets real attention too, with a flail, a mace and an electrified gauntlet that each suit different situations. The arsenal leans into grim, torture-device creativity, led by the Skull Crusher, which grinds skulls into shrapnel and fires it back at the horde, while the Super Shotgun returns to remind everyone where the series' heart is.

Then id raises the scale. Certain fights put you inside an Atlan, the colossal mechs teased in Doom Eternal, pounding demons with armored fists and machine guns, while others hand you the reins of a cybernetic dragon for aerial battles above sprawling fortresses. The heavy metal score comes from Finishing Move, and a set of difficulty sliders lets you tune game speed and parry timing, so newcomers can find their footing and veterans can turn the screws.

The story fills in the Slayer's origins with more cutscenes and character work than the series has ever attempted, and the game is strictly single-player, built entirely around its campaign. If you have played Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, The Dark Ages is the bold swerve that completes the trilogy, the version of the Slayer that fights like a tank rather than a fighter jet.
