What would happen if the Doom Slayer stopped sprinting and planted his feet? Doom: The Dark Ages answers with a shield, a wall of demons and an entirely new rhythm. A prequel to Doom (2016), it trades the acrobatic air dashes of Doom Eternal for weight and momentum, casting the Slayer as a living siege weapon in a dark medieval war, and id Software rebuilt its combat around one stunning new tool to make that change sing.

That tool is the Shield Saw. Raise it to block a storm of incoming fire, hurl it to stagger and shred enemies, or lock onto a target and charge across the battlefield to land with an explosive impact that scatters weaker demons. The real magic is the parry: time your block against certain glowing attacks and you send that energy straight back at the attacker, turning the biggest enemies' assaults into openings. Unlockable melee weapons with very different attack styles join a heavy arsenal of shotguns, plasma weapons and grenade launchers, and everything is upgraded at Sentinel shrines with gold and rubies you find in the field.

The setting is Argent D'Nur, home of the Night Sentinels, where the Slayer fights as a weapon of the Maykrs and the campaign stretches across 22 chapters with wider, more open battlefields than any modern Doom. Some missions put you in the cockpit of the Atlan, a towering mech that brawls with titans, while others hand you the reins of a cybernetic dragon for aerial assaults. Optional challenges in every level, plus secrets, lore pages and collectible dolls, reward players who explore every corner. It is a pure single-player campaign, and difficulty sliders let you tune details like enemy damage so the experience can be as punishing or as forgiving as you like.

Running on id Tech 8, it is the best-looking Doom yet on PlayStation 5, and the soundtrack's grinding, guitar-driven riffs land every time a horde comes crashing in. The Dark Ages also fills in the Slayer's origin with more cinematics and story than the series has ever attempted, making it the chapter where Doom's mythology finally steps into the spotlight and a bold, confident reinvention of how the series plays.
