Item Description

Turn the lights off before you start PlayStation Doom. Williams Entertainment's 1995 conversion of id Software's shooter is the darkest, most unsettling take on classic Doom, and that is entirely deliberate. Rather than simply shrinking the PC game to fit, the team rebuilt its mood, using the PlayStation's colored lighting to bathe corridors in sickly greens and hellish reds, and replacing Bobby Prince's metal-inspired tracks with a new ambient score and sound design by Aubrey Hodges. John Carmack himself pushed the developers to lean on the console's colored lighting and transparency effects after an early prototype fell flat, and the payoff shows in every room.

Hodges's work is the heart of it. Low drones, distant machinery and unnerving textures hum under every level, turning familiar maps into something closer to survival horror. Combined with the deep shadows and translucent effects, it gives this version an atmosphere fans still single out, and Hodges carried that sound forward into Final Doom on PlayStation and Doom 64.

There is a lot of game on the disc as well: 59 levels in all, with 28 drawn from The Ultimate Doom, 23 from Doom II and eight original maps made for this release, including the secret Club Doom. The full arsenal is here, from the pistol to the super shotgun and BFG 9000, along with most of the demons of both games and a new Nightmare Spectre, a darker, twice-as-tough take on the invisible Spectre. Ultra-Violence mixes Doom II monsters into the Ultimate Doom levels, and two linked consoles support head-to-head and cooperative play.

Many players rank it among the finest console versions of classic Doom, and its reputation has only grown, with fans building dedicated projects to recreate its lighting and soundtrack on modern PCs. On an original PlayStation with the room dark and the volume up, it is a frightening, fast and very different way to play id's masterpiece.
