Complete in box: the disc, the manual and the original case, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. This is a Japanese region release; the packaging and game text are primarily in Japanese. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Discs are professionally resurfaced when they need it and tested before listing. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Few controllers have ever made a living room louder than a pair of plastic bongos. Donkey Konga came from the Namco team behind the Taiko no Tatsujin drum games, and it took that know-how, wrapped it in Donkey Kong's jungle swagger and asked players to pound and clap along to the music. Released in Japan in December 2003 and in North America in 2004, it went on to earn an Innovation award at the 2005 Game Developers Conference and the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' Console Family Game of the Year.
The idea is wonderfully physical. Notes scroll across the screen in four colors: yellow for the left drum, red for the right, purple for both at once and light blue for a clap, which the DK Bongos pick up through a built-in microphone. The game is designed around those bongos, though a standard GameCube controller works too. It is easy to pick up on the Monkey difficulty and seriously demanding on Gorilla, and switching from drumming to clapping in the middle of a fast passage takes more concentration than anyone expects. Street Performance, Challenge, Battle and Jam Session give solo players and groups plenty to chase, and the minigames, including 100M Vine Climb, Banana Juggle and Bash K.Rool, turn the bongos into a game controller in their own right.
Each region received its own track list. The North American release features covers of songs like "Louie Louie," "We Will Rock You," "Rock Lobster" and "Losing My Religion," plus Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 and Nintendo music such as the DK Rap and The Legend of Zelda theme, while the original Japanese release runs its own lineup with Japanese favorites like the children's song "Mori no Kumasan."
This is where the bongo era began. The trilogy grew from here, and the DK Bongos went on to power Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, but the first Donkey Konga is the purest version of the idea: a rhythm game that made the GameCube a party centerpiece and turned a whole room into a drum circle.
The North American port of Donkey Konga, which has a track listing different from the original Japanese version.
