Some platformers ask you to be careful. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze asks you to be brave, then rewards you with some of the most exhilarating levels Nintendo has ever published. Retro Studios followed its Donkey Kong Country Returns revival with a sequel that is bigger, bolder and more inventive in nearly every way.
A fleet of Viking-themed arctic invaders called the Snowmads, led by Lord Fredrik, freezes Donkey Kong Island solid and blows DK far out to sea. The trip home crosses a chain of islands, from the swamps of Lost Mangroves to the fall colors of Autumn Heights, the plains of Bright Savannah, the waters of Sea Breeze Cove and the fruit-factory chaos of Juice Falls, before the final push to reclaim the frozen home island. Underwater swimming returns to the series, and DK can team up with Diddy and his barrel jetpack, Dixie and her spinning ponytail, or Cranky Kong, who bounces on his cane like a pogo stick over spikes and enemies, with each partner changing how a level plays. Funky Kong runs the shop this time.
The level design is the star. Stages twist and transform as you play, the camera swings around to follow mine cart and rocket barrel runs, and the striking silhouette levels return. Hidden puzzle pieces and KONG letters reward exploration, and the bosses are long, escalating battles that test everything you have learned. David Wise, composer of the original Donkey Kong Country, returned to work on the soundtrack, and his tracks are the kind fans hum for years.
Tropical Freeze was later ported to the Nintendo Switch, but this Wii U release is where it began, and it is a high point for the Donkey Kong series and for 2D platforming on the console. Challenging, gorgeous and constantly surprising, it is the kind of game that turns a tough jump into a moment you remember.

All the challenging ground-pounding, barrel-blasting, side-scrolling mine cart action from the Donkey Kong Country series is back along with a bushel of new game-play elements and features. And now, there are four playable characters! Dixie Kong is back to join the adventure as a playable character alongside Diddy Kong, and for the first time in Donkey Kong Country, bearded old hero Cranky Kong joins the adventure with his bouncy cane. Any of the three can buddy up with Donkey Kong, and each character offers a different gameplay experience. On their journey to reclaim Donkey Kong Island, Donkey Kong and his friends travel across five islands with a variety of stages that include underwater areas and frozen environments.
