The first time a rocket barrel sends Donkey Kong screaming through a stage with no brakes and no margin for error, it is clear Retro Studios understood what made the Super NES classics so thrilling. Fresh off the Metroid Prime trilogy, the studio revived Rare's platforming series with Donkey Kong Country Returns, the first new Country adventure in more than a decade, and built it around tight controls, ruthless level design and a sense of momentum that pulls you forward from the first jungle stage.

The Tiki Tak Tribe has hypnotized the island's animals and made off with DK's banana hoard, and the chase runs through eight worlds: jungle, beach, ancient ruins, caves, forest, cliffs, a smoke-belching factory and a volcano. Mine cart runs and rocket barrel stages test your reflexes at full speed, while the sunset silhouette levels, which render the action in stark black against a glowing sky, are some of the most memorable images on the console. Puzzle pieces and K-O-N-G letters reward careful exploration, and collecting every letter in a world opens a bonus stage.

Diddy Kong rides on DK's back with his barrel jetpack, letting the pair hover to stretch out a jump, and in two-player co-op a friend takes control of Diddy and his peanut popgun. Rambi the rhino returns for some smashing, Squawks the parrot helps hunt down hidden items, and Cranky Kong runs a shop stocked with helpful extras. Shaking the Wii Remote handles rolls and ground pounds, and Kenji Yamamoto's soundtrack weaves David Wise's classic Country themes into fresh arrangements.

This is a demanding game, and proud of it, but the difficulty comes from honest design rather than cheap tricks, and a Super Guide stands by to help with a stage that has you completely stuck. Its success led straight to Tropical Freeze on the Wii U and later re-releases, but the Wii original is where the revival began. It makes a fine centerpiece for a Donkey Kong shelf, the game that brought the Country series roaring back.
