Item Description

Squeezing Donkey Kong Country onto a Game Boy Color sounds like a dare. The Super Nintendo original was famous for pre-rendered graphics that looked impossible on 16-bit hardware, and the GBC is a far smaller machine. Rare took the dare itself, and the result is a remarkably faithful handheld version of the game that put Donkey Kong back on top in the mid-1990s.

The story is pure DKC: King K. Rool and his Kremlings have raided Donkey Kong's banana hoard, and DK and Diddy chase them across the island through jungles, caves, treetop villages, underwater reefs and runaway mine-cart tracks. The rhythm of the SNES game survives the trip, with barrel cannons, hidden bonus rooms and animal buddies like Rambi the rhino and Enguarde the swordfish for smashing through trouble. Built on an enhanced version of the Donkey Kong Land engine, it shows one Kong on screen at a time, and you swap between them as you play.

Rare also used the move as a chance to add something. Autosaving replaced Candy Kong's save points, so Candy now hosts Candy's Challenge, a set of tests in each world where DK and Diddy compete for a Banana Coin. There are multiplayer minigames to play with a friend, and stickers you collect can be printed on the Game Boy Printer. Some of the music borrows from the Donkey Kong Land games, a nice nod to the Kongs' earlier handheld outings. It runs only on Game Boy Color hardware (or later Game Boy systems), not the original Game Boy, and in Japan it was released as Donkey Kong 2001.

That combination makes it a fascinating piece of Rare history: the studio's own reimagining of its landmark platformer for a handheld, sitting between the Donkey Kong Land trilogy and the later Game Boy Advance port, and still a great way to run K. Rool's gauntlet on the go.
