Item Description

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast started life as a GameCube racer designed for the DK Bongos, the drum controller from Donkey Konga and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. By the time Paon's game reached the Wii, the bongos were gone, but the idea of drumming your way to victory survived: you shake the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to build speed, lift them to jump and use motion to bump rivals and slip past obstacles.

Instead of karts, the Kong family and their Kremling rivals race on rocket-powered barrels, blasting along themed tracks that steer you through curves automatically so the action stays focused on speed, items and well-timed bursts. The Wild Move adds a signature surge of power, and Cranky Kong's Flight School walks newcomers through the basics across a series of lessons before the real races begin.

It is a strange, energetic slice of Donkey Kong history, and reviewers at the time found the full-body controls as tiring as they were novel. That is part of what makes it interesting today: Barrel Blast is a snapshot of Nintendo's motion-control experimentation, a game whose design you can still trace back to a pair of drums. Local multiplayer turns the arm-waving into a party event, and it is hard not to laugh watching friends flail their way down the final stretch.

For Donkey Kong collectors, Barrel Blast preserves the franchise's most unusual racing experiment, a spin-off that sits apart from Mario Kart and the Country platformers alike.

About the game

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast is a racing game where the player can handle the selected character using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, replacing the DK Bongos that initially were to be used. To speed the player must shake the Wii Remote and Nunchuk simultaneously, lift them to jump and use the motion sensor to beat rivals and obstacles and using items, while the character will be guided by the route of the tracks, including curves of automatic. Players can learn to race at Cranky's flight school where Cranky gives 8 lessons on how to play the game, acceleration, use of elements and Wild Move.
