Most platformers ask you to find the path. Donkey Kong Bananza hands you the fists to make one. Almost everything in its underground world can be punched, dug through, ripped loose and hurled, and the sheer physicality of DK tearing through a canyon wall to reach a glittering Banandium Gem is exactly the kind of thrill a new console needs. Built by the Nintendo EPD team behind Super Mario Odyssey, it arrived on the Switch 2 in July 2025 and quickly became the system's showpiece.

The adventure begins on Ingot Isle, where a gold rush is in full swing and the mining company VoidCo has been helping itself to DK's prized Banandium Gems. Its president, Void Kong, is digging toward the planet's core in search of the Banandium Root, and DK follows him down through layer after layer of a hollow world, each with its own theme, from tropical lagoons to ice and lava. Along the way he rescues a talking rock that turns out to be Pauline, the singer from the original Donkey Kong arcade game, reimagined here as a 13-year-old whose voice unlocks DK's wildest powers.

Those powers are the Bananza transformations, learned from elders scattered through the underground: a hulking gorilla form that hits harder than anything else in the game, a zebra built for speed, an ostrich that glides and drops egg bombs, an elephant that inhales terrain and spits it back out, and a snake that springs to new heights. Gems feed a skill tree that keeps upgrading DK, and around a thousand of them hide inside walls, under floors and behind bosses, so every layer rewards the urge to smash one more thing. A second player can join as Pauline, using her singing to trigger transformations and blast enemies, and DK Artist mode turns the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls into a tool for carving and painting your own sculptures.

Naoto Kubo's soundtrack threads in arrangements from Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong 64, and Pauline's songs give each transformation its swagger. Critics called it the Switch 2's killer app, and it won Best Family Game at The Game Awards 2025 alongside a Game of the Year nomination. As the first fully 3D Donkey Kong platformer since DK64, it was well worth the quarter-century wait.
