Item Condition

Donkey Kong 64 comes complete with the original Nintendo 64 box and the game cartridge — the only thing missing is the manual. The box and cart are the real showstoppers for any N64 collection display, and they're both here. Coolection has fully tested this one, and it was running great — just keep in mind that vintage cartridges can behave a little differently depending on your setup and console. Item Description

Few Nintendo 64 games announce themselves like Donkey Kong 64. Switch it on and the DK Rap launches into its introduction of the Kong family, and from there Rare's 1999 adventure never stops piling on more: more Kongs, more worlds, more things to find. King K. Rool and his Kremlings have invaded DK Isle, kidnapped Donkey Kong's friends, made off with his banana hoard and started powering up the Blast-O-Matic to wipe the island off the map. It was the first Donkey Kong game played in 3D, and it went big.

The central idea is five playable Kongs. Donkey Kong frees Diddy, Tiny, Lanky and Chunky one by one, and each brings a weapon, an instrument and moves of their own: Diddy's Peanut Popguns and jetpack, Tiny's Feather Bow and Ponytail Twirl, Lanky's Grape Shooter and trombone, Chunky's Pineapple Launcher and boulder-lifting strength, DK's Coconut Shooter. Bananas are color coded to each Kong, so the tag barrels scattered through every level set the game's rhythm. You spot a door only Diddy's guitar can open, make a mental note, swap Kongs and come back. Cranky Kong brews new abilities, Funky Kong supplies the weapons and Candy Kong the instruments, and old friends Rambi the Rhino and Enguarde the Swordfish return for animal transformations.

The worlds are enormous for 1999, from Jungle Japes and Angry Aztec to Frantic Factory, Gloomy Galleon, Fungi Forest, Crystal Caves and Creepy Castle, all linked by a sprawling island hub. Hidden inside are two complete arcade games, Nintendo's original 1981 Donkey Kong and Rare's own Jetpac, and you have to beat both to finish the story. Up to four players can face off in the multiplayer battle modes. The game also requires the N64 Expansion Pak to run, and its scale makes it easy to see why. Grant Kirkhope's soundtrack gives every world its own groove and is hummable decades later.

Donkey Kong 64 has always split opinion, and that is part of its charm. Critics praised its size and visuals and grumbled about the backtracking, while players who love the collect-a-thon era treat its pile of Golden Bananas, colored bananas, coins and blueprints as a feature rather than a flaw. It sold over five million copies, won the 1999 E3 Game Critics award for Best Platform Game, and was Rare's last Donkey Kong game before Microsoft bought the studio. For more than twenty-five years it was also the series' only 3D platformer, until Donkey Kong Bananza arrived in 2025, so this is where the Kongs first stepped into three dimensions, and late-90s Rare at full volume.
