Item Description

Before most people knew his name, Mario was Jumpman, a carpenter scrambling up steel girders while a giant ape hurled barrels down at him. Coleco's Atari 2600 version of Donkey Kong brought that showdown into homes at the height of the arcade boom, and for a lot of players it was the first time they guided Mario anywhere.

The port keeps the essentials that made the arcade game such a phenomenon. Mario leaps rolling barrels and climbs ladders up the slanted girders of the first stage toward Pauline, with the hammer giving him a brief, satisfying chance to smash his way through. The second stage is the rivet stage, where Mario pulls out the rivets holding up Donkey Kong's platform and sends the ape crashing down. The arcade's other two stages didn't make it: Garry Kitchen, who programmed the game, has explained that a 4K cartridge and a tight schedule limited what he could fit.

Within those limits it has real charm. The slanted girders and multicolored characters are there, and the chunky barrels and bright palette give it a look all its own. It also sits at the center of a lasting bit of collector lore, the rumor that Coleco deliberately made the Atari version weaker to sell its own ColecoVision, which Kitchen has always denied.

It comes from the short period when Coleco held the home console rights to Donkey Kong and Nintendo's characters appeared on rival systems, which makes it a fascinating piece of Mario history for a 2600 collection, and a quick, fun barrel-jumping challenge on original hardware.
