Magic: The Gathering single: Donal, Herald of Wings. Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
Donal, Herald of Wings gives every flier you cast a ghostly twin. Once each turn, when you cast a nonlegendary creature spell with flying, you may copy it, and the copy becomes a token that is a 1/1 Spirit in addition to its other types. The token keeps the original creature's abilities, so a flier with an enter-the-battlefield trigger fires twice, and a creature whose abilities key off Spirits or tokens gets an extra boost.
That makes Donal a fun mono-blue commander or a strong piece in any deck stuffed with flying creatures. The best targets are fliers whose value comes from what they do rather than their size: card-draw birds, creatures with powerful enter triggers, and fliers that buff other Spirits or fliers. Since the copy is a 1/1, cheap utility fliers lose little in the translation, and every turn you cast one you effectively get two.
Donal debuted in Crimson Vow Commander in 2021, the Innistrad Commander decks themed around a gothic wedding. This is the Crimson Vow Commander printing, illustrated by Wayne Reynolds, in non-foil, and Reynolds' detailed, kinetic style suits a wizard surrounded by spectral wings.
