Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Behind its candy-colored art, Dokapon Journey is a board-game RPG with a mean streak. Monsters have overrun the Kingdom of Dokapon, and the King has offered his crown and his daughter's hand to whoever saves the land. Three or four players race across a board-style map to claim the prize, with the computer filling any empty seats, and the real goal is to finish richer than everyone else at the table by any means necessary.
Each turn you spin, move and gamble on whatever the space holds: a monster battle, a random event, a shop or a town. Free a monster-held town and it pays you taxes; invest in it and it pays more. Battles run on a rock-paper-scissors system of attacks, magic, defending and counters, and the eight starting classes each bring their own battle ability plus a passive skill that triggers at the most inconvenient moments for everyone else.
Then the knives come out. Beat a rival in combat and you can take their gold, equipment, a spell or even a town, and the winner gets to rename the loser to anything that fits in the name field. You can try to rob the taxes from a rival's town, at the risk of being branded a criminal with a bounty on your head if it goes wrong, and a secret pair of darkling classes exist purely to terrorize the other players. Story mode runs eight chapters of royal tasks, while Greed and Battle modes, including Liberation Race and Death Match, offer shorter and nastier contests.
Developed by Suzak, published in Japan by Sting and brought west by Atlus in 2009, Journey is the DS chapter of the Dokapon series, a portable counterpart to the friendship-testing Dokapon Kingdom. Multiplayer is where it lives: pass one DS around hot-seat style, share it through Download Play, or link multiple cartridges so everyone picks their own class. Reviews were mixed, with luck and cheap computer opponents drawing complaints, but with three friends in the room it becomes exactly the gleeful chaos the series is known for.
The Kingdom of Dokapon is in peril! Monsters have invaded, and the King has offered his crown and his daughter's hand in marriage to anyone who can save the land! Prepare to take down your friends or face off against the Nintendo DS in this race to save the Kingdom and win the throne!
