Item Description

God is a woman who loves skee-ball, the thirteenth apostle is still bitter about being written out of the Bible, and two fallen angels have found a loophole that could unmake all of existence. This is Dogma, Kevin Smith's 1999 comedy, the fourth film in his View Askewniverse after Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy, and easily his most ambitious.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck play Loki and Bartleby, angels banished to Wisconsin who learn that a church centennial in New Jersey could let them stroll back into Heaven. The catch is that proving God wrong would undo creation itself. Standing in their way is Bethany, a woman in the middle of a crisis of faith played by Linda Fiorentino, recruited by the Metatron, voice of God, whom Alan Rickman plays with bone-dry perfection. Her road trip picks up Chris Rock as Rufus, Salma Hayek as the muse Serendipity, and Jay and Silent Bob as the least likely prophets imaginable, while George Carlin's Cardinal Glick unveils the grinning Buddy Christ for his "Catholicism WOW!" campaign. Jason Lee lurks as the demon Azrael, and Alanis Morissette makes a memorable turn as God.

The film drew protests on release for its religious satire, yet under the profanity and the notorious excrement monster is a surprisingly earnest movie about faith, doubt and the gap between belief and blind rules. The dialogue is classic Smith: long, quotable and gleefully irreverent, spoken by a cast that clearly relished every scene.

This is the UMD Video release, the movie format Sony built for watching films on the PSP. UMD movies were a brief experiment in handheld home video, which makes them a quirky corner of PSP history, and a View Askew cult comedy feels right at home in it. For Kevin Smith devotees, it is a fun and unusual way to own a favorite.
