Item Description

Dodge 'Em turns a simple race track into a high-speed game of chicken. The screen is a set of four concentric roadways lined with dots, and your job is to drive counter-clockwise collecting every one of them while a computer car circles the other way with a single goal in mind: a head-on collision. Gaps at the top, bottom, left and right of the track let both cars switch lanes, and the whole game comes down to guessing where your opponent will cut across next.

The driving is simple and satisfying. Hold the button and your car doubles its speed, which is how you outrun the pursuer or bait it into the wrong lane before slipping through a gap. Clear a screen and the next one is tougher, and on later screens a second crash car joins the hunt. Game variations and the difficulty switches tune the challenge, and two-player modes bring a friend into the action.

Dodge 'Em was programmed by Carla Meninsky, who also created Warlords and programmed the 2600 version of Star Raiders, and it is close in spirit to Sega's 1979 arcade game Head On. Video magazine's Arcade Alley column praised it as one of those rare games that is exciting in both one- and two-player versions, and it earned an honorable mention at the Arkie Awards.

It is a quick, clever game that anyone in the room can learn in seconds, and a great reminder of how much tension Atari's early designers could build out of a few dots and two little cars.

About the game

Dodge 'Em is a 1980 Atari 2600 video game, a driving game based on Sega's Head On (1979). The player controls one car and has to drive counter-clockwise, avoiding computer-controlled cars whose sole aim is to produce a head-on collision. The player's car can travel at two speeds, a 'normal' speed which is the same speed as computer-controlled cars, or if the player presses the controller button, his or her car travels at a 'fast' speed double its normal speed. The computer-controlled cars have only one speed. Players change lanes by pushing the controller in the appropriate direction when their car is near one of the gaps in the roadway.
