Item Description

The first thing DmC does is make the city itself your enemy. When demons drag Dante into Limbo, the streets of Limbo City buckle and stretch, walls lurch toward him, taunting messages scrawl themselves across the buildings and the arena reshapes itself mid-fight. Ninja Theory's 2013 reboot of Capcom's series is loud, angry and stylish, and underneath the attitude is a seriously good action game.

This Dante is younger and rawer, a Nephilim, half angel and half demon, who discovers that the demon king Mundus controls humanity through debt, a propaganda news network and a mass-market energy drink called Virility. He is pulled into the fight by his twin brother Vergil, leader of the activist group The Order, and Kat, a young psychic who can see into Limbo. The satire is blunt and the bosses are memorable, from a monstrous Succubus at the Virility factory to Bob Barbas, the Raptor News anchor fought inside his own broadcast.

Combat is where DmC earns its place in the series. Holding one trigger switches Dante to angelic weapons such as the Osiris scythe for sweeping crowds, the other to demonic weapons like the Arbiter axe for heavy single hits, with Rebellion and the Ebony & Ivory pistols always on hand. Angel and demon whips pull Dante toward enemies or yank enemies toward him, so a single combo can travel across a whole arena without touching the ground, while the style meter climbs from D to SSS as your strings get more inventive. The soundtrack by Combichrist and Noisia gives each encounter an industrial, electronic punch.

The redesigned Dante sparked a famous fan backlash, but critics largely praised the combat and the striking art direction. It is a one-off detour in the Devil May Cry timeline, with Capcom returning to the original Dante for Devil May Cry 5, which makes this alternate take a distinctive standalone chapter. The 2015 Definitive Edition came only to newer consoles, so on the Xbox 360 this is the reboot as it originally launched.

About the game

DmC: Devil May Cry is the fifth game in the hack-and-slash third-person action series and the first not largely developed by Capcom. This title is a reimagining of the series, with the same protagonist Dante, but set in an alternate universe. The Dante in this game is very different from before, doing away with the trademark white hair and altering the main character as well as the game's tone with a much more Western influence. The gameplay is still largely identical as Dante engages many opponents with a fast fighting style, stringing together combos and hits in quick succession.
