The guitar games let you pretend you were in a band. DJ Hero 2 lets you pretend you are headlining the club. FreeStyleGames' 2010 sequel, published by Activision, takes the turntable-controller concept of the original DJ Hero and pushes it toward something closer to real performance, with more mixes, more room for personal flair and modes built for showing off in front of a crowd.
The game is built around Activision's turntable controller, and it plays like an instrument rather than a button-matching exercise. You tap along with the beat, scratch the platter, slide the crossfader between two songs and spin the effects dial, all while building toward a well-timed Euphoria boost. The big change from the first game is freestyle play: dedicated sections let you crossfade, drop samples and scratch however you like, so no two runs through a mix sound quite the same.
The setlist features more than seventy mashups blending hip-hop, dance, pop and electronic music, with major DJ talent behind them, including deadmau5 and David Guetta. A career mode carries you through a run of club gigs, DJ Battles pit two players' mixing skills against each other, and vocal parts let a second player grab a microphone to sing or rap over the mix while the DJ works, turning a living room into a small club night.
DJ Hero 2 earned strong reviews but arrived just as the rhythm-game boom was fading, and it became the last entry in the series. That gives it a special place for music-game collectors: the most complete version of an idea that never got a third chapter. For anyone who still has a turntable controller, the Wii release is a direct way to keep the party going on original hardware.
