Item Description
Four life and a single generic mana can shrink almost any early threat into the graveyard, and that bargain is why Dismember shows up in decks that never planned to cast a black spell. Each of its two Phyrexian black symbols can be paid with black mana or 2 life, so the cost slides anywhere from three mana down to one. Target creature gets -5/-5 until end of turn, and because that drops toughness rather than dealing damage, it handles indestructible creatures as cleanly as ordinary ones.
Dismember was born in New Phyrexia in 2011, the set that introduced Phyrexian mana, and it quickly became the poster child for that mechanic's flexibility. In a red-white aggro list or a mono-green stompy deck it plays like a colorless answer you can fire off on turn one; in a black deck you can pay the mana instead and keep your life total for later. Few removal spells adapt to so many shells.
This is the Time Spiral Remastered printing, collector number 322, illustrated by Jason Felix and offered here in non-foil. It comes from the set's timeshifted sheet, which dressed modern cards in Magic's classic pre-2003 frame, so a card created in 2011 wears the old-school border it never had originally. That contrast makes it a fun pickup for a retro-frame binder or a deck built to look like it came out of a 1990s shoebox.
