Item Description

The best moment in Dishonored often comes before anything happens: Corvo crouched on a rooftop above a Dunwall checkpoint, mask on, weighing whether to Blink past the guards, possess a rat and scurry through a drain, or drop onto the officer below with his blade drawn. Arkane Studios' 2012 stealth-action game is built around that choice, and few games have made improvisation feel this satisfying.

Corvo Attano is the Empress's bodyguard, framed for her assassination and the kidnapping of her daughter Emily, then broken out of prison by a band of Loyalists who point him at the conspirators. The Outsider, a mysterious being who marks Corvo, grants him supernatural powers: Blink for short-range teleporting, Dark Vision to see through walls, Bend Time, Possession and a summoned swarm of plague rats. Runes and bone charms hidden across the city strengthen those abilities, and they combine with a crossbow, pistol, grenades, spring razors and sleep darts in endlessly creative ways. Stopping time, possessing the gunman and walking him into the path of his own bullet is the kind of trick players discover and immediately tell their friends about.

Dunwall is the real star. Visual design director Viktor Antonov's whale-oil-powered industrial city, ravaged by a rat plague and patrolled by stilt-walking Tallboys, is dense with side routes, audiographs and overheard conversations. Each mission is a compact sandbox, and the high points are unforgettable: the masquerade of Lady Boyle's Last Party, where you have to work out which of three identically masked sisters is your target, and the Golden Cat bathhouse in the Distillery District.

Then there is chaos. Every killing pushes Dunwall toward a darker state, with more rats, more plague-stricken Weepers and a bleaker ending, while a careful run leads somewhere more hopeful. Every major target can be removed without a single kill, often through a clever side route that is more satisfying than the knife. That reactivity made Dishonored a critical hit and launched a series that continued with Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider. On the Xbox 360 it is the original game as it launched, and the natural first stop before the sequels.
