Item Description
Few stealth games hand you as many ways to solve a single problem as Dishonored, and fewer make every one of them feel this good. You can blink across rooftops unseen, possess a rat to slip through a drainpipe, stop time and stroll past a patrol, or simply kick in the front door with a pistol and a blade. Arkane Studios built an entire world around that freedom and then made you live with the consequences.
You are Corvo Attano, bodyguard to Empress Jessamine Kaldwin, framed for her murder and the abduction of her daughter Emily. Freed from prison with the help of a band of loyalists, Corvo becomes their assassin, working through the conspirators who seized the throne under the Lord Regent. Dunwall is the star: a whaling city of iron, whale-oil tanks and crackling electric walls of light, ravaged by a rat plague and patrolled by towering, stilt-walking Tallboys. Its visual design was led by Viktor Antonov, the artist behind Half-Life 2's City 17, and every district feels lived in, from crumbling flooded slums to the gilded parlors of the aristocrats who profit from the misery.
The supernatural comes from the Outsider, an enigmatic being who marks Corvo and grants powers such as Blink, Dark Vision, Possession, Devouring Swarm and Bend Time. A living, whispering artifact called the Heart points the way to runes that upgrade those powers and to bone charms that tweak your abilities. Meanwhile a hidden chaos system tracks how much blood you spill. Play violently and the city grows darker, the plague spreads and the ending turns grim; stay merciful and every major target has a non-lethal fate waiting to be discovered, from branding a corrupt High Overseer a heretic to picking the right masked guest at Lady Boyle's party. It is entirely possible to finish the game without killing anyone.
Directed by Harvey Smith and Raphaël Colantonio, with a haunting score by Daniel Licht, Dishonored became the foundation of a series that continued with Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider. Each mission is a dense, handcrafted sandbox with multiple routes in and out, so a second run as a silent ghost after a first as a vengeful butcher feels like a different game, and on PlayStation 3 it is the original console version of the adventure that started it all.
