Valvatorez was once a tyrant whose name alone made the Netherworld tremble. Then he made a promise to a human girl, swore off human blood until he could keep it, and watched his power drain away until he was reduced to training Prinnies, the series' put-upon, penguin-shaped servants, while living on a steady diet of sardines. When the Netherworld's rotten government, the Corrupternment, decides to exterminate the Prinnies in his care, he does the only honorable thing a vampire of his word can do and starts a revolution. It is an absurd premise played completely straight by its hero, and that mix of stubborn nobility and pure nonsense is exactly why Disgaea 4 is such good company.
His scheming werewolf retainer Fenrich plots on his behalf, and the rebellion grows to include Fuka, a hot-tempered girl convinced the whole Netherworld is a dream, Desco, a sweet monster whose life goal is to become a final boss, the angel Artina and Emizel, son of the Netherworld's president. On the battlefield it is classic Nippon Ichi grid tactics with real depth: lifting and throwing allies across the map, Geo Blocks that reshape colored panels into puzzles, monsters that Magichange into weapons or fuse into towering giants, and the Item World, where every sword and accessory hides randomly generated floors you can dive into for power.
Disgaea 4 also turns its own politics into systems. The Cam-Pain HQ lets you arrange your army around Evil Symbols on a grid for bonuses and appoint Evil Deputies, while the Senate decides which new classes and perks you unlock, with bribes very much on the table. A Promise Revisited is the complete version of the game: every piece of downloadable content from the PS3 release, extra post-story scenarios, new high-level Peta spells and a Cheat Shop that lets you shift rewards between experience, mana and HL so the grind bends to your schedule. RPG Site called its gameplay the best in the series at the time.
That matters on a handheld. Disgaea is a series measured in hundreds of hours and levels that climb to 9999, and the Vita turns a quick Item World run or one more stage into something you can do anywhere. With damage counts that eventually swell into absurd numbers and a hero who never stops talking about sardines, this is the series at its most generous and most self-aware.
Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited is a port of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten on the Playstation Vita. It contains all of the downloadable content made available in the original PS3 game and also features newly added game content. However some content was also cut out, such as the old SD sprites and voice acting for certain scenes.
