Item Description
At Evil Academy, the best students are the ones who skip class, ignore their homework and torment the teachers. Mao, the top honor student, has a perfect delinquent record, and he has decided that the only way to overthrow his father, the Overlord, is to become a hero. Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention wraps that gloriously backward premise around one of the deepest tactical RPG systems Nippon Ichi Software has ever built.
Battles play out on grid maps where positioning is everything. Allies standing side by side can launch team attacks, characters can lift and throw one another across the map, and colored Geo Panels change the rules of each fight with their effects. Disgaea 3 brought its own big ideas to the series. Monsters can Magichange into weapons wielded by humanoid allies, Evilities give every character a passive ability that shapes how you build them, and the classroom system lets you arrange your students' seats so that neighbors help one another in battle. Then there is the Item World, randomly generated floors hidden inside every piece of equipment, which you dive into to power that item up. Levels climb into the thousands, and reincarnation lets you start a favorite character over with stronger stats.
The cast is pure Disgaea. Raspberyl, a self-styled delinquent whose idea of rebellion is showing up to class, Almaz, the earnest young hero Mao drags into his schemes, and Sapphire, the princess with a frightening enthusiasm for violence, all play off Mao's scheming in a story packed with parody and slapstick. This Vita edition, released in 2012, goes well beyond the 2008 PS3 original Absence of Justice. It bundles in all the downloadable content from that version and adds four new story scenarios, two new playable characters in Rutile and Stella, and Fuka and Desco from Disgaea 4 as unlockable allies, along with Tera-level spells and animated character portraits.
The result is the most complete version of Disgaea 3 ever released, on a handheld that suits its bottomless endgame perfectly. A single Item World dive or a quick round of level grinding fits into a few spare minutes, yet the post-game can absorb hundreds of hours. It is the version to pick if you want Mao's story with every extra the series added along the way.
