Item Description

Grab up to three friends, pick a Rookie and wade into a Digital World that has gone badly wrong. Digimon World 4 turns the Digimon World series into a real-time, hack-and-slash action RPG, and it was built from the start for as many as four players fighting side by side.

You play as a member of the D.S.G., the Digital Security Guard, with Agumon, Veemon, Guilmon or Dorumon as your starting partner. An X-virus is tearing through the Digimon population, and the Yamato Server has vanished, replaced by the menacing Doom Server. Missions carry you through Death Valley in search of Chief Leomon, across the parched Dry Land and the toxic Venom Jungle, and finally into the Machine Pit, with heavyweight bosses like Apocalymon, MaloMyotismon and Lucemon waiting along the way. The story loosely follows the Japanese film Digital Monster X-Evolution and even reuses footage from it, a fun bit of trivia for longtime fans.

Combat is fast and gear-driven. Your Digimon swings swords and axes and fires guns, and how you fight, which partner you chose and how far you have leveled all shape the digivolutions that open up. Completing missions for the Digi-Elves unlocks new forms, bringing the playable roster to 16 Digimon, so there is real reason to replay areas with friends and compare evolutions. With four players on screen, each partner swinging a different weapon and racing toward its next form, it plays more like a dungeon-crawling brawler than a traditional monster-raising game.

Reviews were mixed. IGN felt it had the makings of a decent action RPG while criticizing its single-player mode, camera and cheap enemies, which says a lot about where its strengths lie: this is a game to play together. Released in Japan as Digimon World X before reaching North America in 2005, it captures a very specific moment in the franchise, and it is at its best as a couch co-op session with friends who grew up on Agumon and Veemon.
