Item Description

Digimon World 3 opens with a premise that felt futuristic in 2002: a kid named Junior logs into Digimon Online, a virtual-reality MMORPG run by the MAGAMI corporation, and then discovers he cannot log out. A system error traps the players inside, MAGAMI blames a hacker called Lucky Mouse, and Junior and his friend Kail set out with their Digimon partners to find out who is really pulling the strings. Unusually for a Japanese game, it reached North American shelves in June 2002, a month before its Japanese release.

The structure is a classic overworld RPG. You explore server cities such as Asuka and Amaterasu and the wild zones between them, taking on random encounters and story bosses as the conspiracy unfolds. At the start you choose a preset pack of three Rookies, with familiar faces such as Agumon, Renamon, Guilmon and Patamon in the mix, and more partners join over the course of the adventure.

The battle system is the biggest change from Digimon World 2. Fights are turn-based but one-on-one, with the option to tag in another member of your trio mid-battle, so reading an opponent and swapping at the right moment matters as much as raw stats. Digivolution comes in three flavors: normal digivolution into Champion, Ultimate and Mega forms, the powerful Blast digivolution, and DNA digivolution, which opens up forms you cannot reach any other way. Seeing Agumon climb all the way to the big names of the anime is a payoff fans still talk about.

Critics were lukewarm, pointing to slow battles and loading, but Digimon World 3 has always had a stronger following among players than among reviewers, thanks to its huge roster, its online-world story and its sense of a living network to explore. As the final Digimon World entry on the original PlayStation, it caps the series' first era, and it is the one many fans name when they think back to Saturday mornings spent with the anime and afternoons spent grinding for Mega forms.

About the game

Digimon World 3 is a role-playing video game created by Bandai for the PlayStation. You play as a child called Junior who enters an online virtual reality MMORPG called "Digimon Online", which is run by the "MAGAMI" corporation. A terrorist attack on the Internet traps Junior and his friends inside the game and he sets out to stop them with his Digimon partners. Unlike past Digimon World games, battles against wild Digimon are random and the battle system although turn-based is very different from Digimon World 2, the most notable distinction is battles are one on one instead of three on three although you may tag in a different Digimon, battles also feature three types of digivolution; normal, Blast, and DNA digivolution.
