Item Description

Digimon Survive opens like a school camping trip and quickly becomes something much colder. Takuma Momozuka and his classmates slip into a strange, half-familiar world of empty towns, old shrines and creatures out of local legend, and the game makes clear early on that not everyone is guaranteed to make it home. It is the darkest, most story-driven take on Digimon the franchise has attempted, built to celebrate the anime's 20th anniversary.

Most of the game unfolds as a visual novel, with Uichi Ukumo's character art and Tomoki Miyoshi's moody score doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Your choices quietly build three values, Moral, Harmony and Wrath, and whichever leads shapes how Takuma's partner Agumon digivolves, how the other students regard you and, roughly two-thirds of the way through, which of three routes the story follows. Each route ends differently, and your decisions determine who survives.

Between story chapters, investigation segments let you explore locations and talk with your companions, and a Free Investigation mode is there when you want to train or recruit. Battles play out on grid maps in the tradition of Fire Emblem and Tactics Ogre, with a twist borrowed from Shin Megami Tensei: you can talk to wild Digimon mid-fight and try to win them over by answering their questions. Partner digivolutions in battle draw on a limited energy pool, and a partner falls back to its Rookie form when it runs dry, so choosing when to unleash a big evolution matters.

Survive took a long road to release, announced in 2018 and delayed more than once before arriving in 2022, and its slow-burn pacing divided critics; some praised the art, music and ambition while others found the battles too simple. What nobody disputes is that it is unlike any other Digimon game. The monsters here are partners in a survival story rather than trophies in a tournament, and the bond between Takuma and Agumon carries real weight by the end. It is the entry to pick up if the anime's emotional moments stuck with you more than the battles.

About the game

This is a story of survival in a strange new world. Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Digimon Anime, Digimon Survive presents a brand-new adventure set in a mysterious world with characters designed by Uichi Ukumo, and music by the much-acclaimed Tomoki Miyoshi. Digimon Survive sees a brand-new group of teenagers, led by Takuma Momozuka, get lost on a school camping trip, finding them transported to a strange new world of monsters and danger. As they fight their way back home through an animated world of difficult decisions and deadly battles, players’ choices throughout the game will impact the evolution of their monster allies, and the final ending. Battles in the game are fought in 2D, in a more classic SRPG style.
