The Digimon Story series has long been the corner of the Digimon universe for fans who want more than the animated adventures: deep, story-driven RPGs that put you inside a richly constructed Digital World and ask you to explore it, raise a team of Digimon and unravel mysteries that unfold across dozens of hours of play. From Cyber Sleuth onward, the series earned serious respect among JRPG fans for its layered narratives, satisfying monster-raising mechanics and a love of the source material that goes far beyond a simple licensed tie-in.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger, developed by Media.Vision and published by Bandai Namco in October 2025, carries that tradition forward on PlayStation 5, eight years after Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's Memory. You play as Dan or Kanan Yuki, an agent of ADAMAS, a covert organization investigating digital anomalies in Tokyo. After a disaster in Shinjuku, the agent is thrown eight years into the past and teams up with Inori Misono and her partner Aegiomon, and the journey leads from Shinjuku and Akihabara into the Digital World of Iliad, where the Titans and a civil war threaten both worlds.

The Digimon Story games have always shone when they lean into their RPG roots, and Time Stranger does exactly that, with a strategic turn-based battle system and more than 450 Digimon to recruit. Digivolution is non-linear, opening multiple evolution paths and even letting a Digimon de-digivolve to a younger form, and each Digimon has one of 16 personality types that shape its stat growth, skills and digivolution conditions. New Agent Skills and Cross Arts let the player's own agent strengthen the team in battle, and the first partner is a choice between Patamon, Gomamon and DemiDevimon.

Time Stranger is also the first Digimon Story entry with an English dub. It passed one million units worldwide within about two months of launch and won an Award for Excellence at the 2026 Japan Game Awards. After an eight-year wait for a new Digimon Story, it is the most ambitious entry yet, a monster-raising RPG with genuine heart behind it.
