Item Description

Dig Dug finally took his vacation, and of course Pooka and Fygar followed him there. Namco's 1985 arcade sequel, released on the NES in North America by Bandai with the subtitle Trouble in Paradise, pulls the series out of the dirt and onto a tropical island, and in doing so it reinvents the whole game.

The tunnels are gone. Instead, Taizo Hori, the hero's real name, carries a drill, and the island is dotted with holes he can bore into. Drilling opens fault lines across the ground, and once a section is cut free it crumbles into the sea, taking every enemy standing on it down with it. His trusty air pump still handles close encounters, but the real thrill is lining up a crack so that a whole chunk of land breaks away beneath a crowd of Pookas and fire-breathing Fygars. Sinking a group in one collapse is far more satisfying than popping them one at a time, and it rewards thinking a few moves ahead.

That shift turns a frantic arcade chase into something closer to a spatial puzzle, where reading the shape of each island and spotting its natural break points becomes the strategy. Every round is a fresh island with its own shape and weak points, and the bright colors and cheerful island setting suit the new concept perfectly.

Dig Dug II never became as famous as the original, which makes it a fun discovery for players who only know the underground classic. It is a clever example of a sequel willing to throw out its own formula, and a natural companion to Namco's other arcade conversions on the NES.
