Nobody should have been surprised when the name Gruber turned up again. Die Hard: Vendetta picks up years after the films, with John McClane working in Los Angeles alongside his grown daughter Lucy, now a police officer herself, when Piet Gruber, son of Hans, arrives with a scheme built around stolen art and a grudge with McClane's name on it. Lucy is taken hostage more than once, and Sgt. Al Powell, with Reginald VelJohnson reprising his role from the films, is back in McClane's corner.
This is a first-person shooter that tries to think like a Die Hard movie. Hostage situations can play out in more than one way, and McClane can grab an enemy and use him as a hostage himself, with the rest of the gang reacting differently depending on how important their captured comrade is. Heroic acts, especially saving civilians, earn Hero Time, a slow-motion state in which McClane moves at full speed while the world crawls, scored with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" in a lovely nod to the first film. Headshots trigger a sweeping bullet-time camera, and a quieter, stealthy approach is often smarter than charging in.
The campaign tours a very Hollywood version of Los Angeles: the Townsend Museum, a Hollywood Boulevard club, a Chinese movie theater, a film studio backlot, the subway, a prison, a harbor fish factory and even a return to Nakatomi Plaza, before a finale that involves a threatened missile strike on LAX and a bomb plot at a movie premiere.
Developer Bits Studios took a winding road to get here, with the project passing through several identities, including Die Hard 64 for the Nintendo 64, before it landed on GameCube. Reviews at launch were mixed, but its place in the library is a curious one. The GameCube version came first, and the PlayStation 2 and Xbox ports were released only in Europe, so in North America Die Hard: Vendetta was a GameCube game. For fans of the films, it is the console adventure that put McClane, Powell and a Gruber back in the same story, and a licensed shooter that aimed higher than most.
John McClane is back. Many years have passed since his work in New York, and he now works for the Century City Police Department (CCPD) in Los Angeles. You are in John's shoes as he must face a new threat. Piet Gruber, the son of Hans Gruber and McClane's old enemy, is up to no good at the Townsend Art Museum. He has stolen valuable art and kidnapped John's now adult daughter and fellow CCPD police officer, Lucy. This game is a First Person Shooter, but it also adds two features: Stealth Mode and Hero Time. Stealth Mode allows John to sneak around quietly, even being able to grab his foes and use them as hostages. This means it may not be best to go in guns blazing, when they could be arrested. Hero Time allows John to react far more quickly, just like Bullet Time in Max Payne. Hero Time is earned by saving hostages and performing heroic tasks in the game.
