Item Description
Blizzard went back to the dark for Diablo IV. After the brighter palette of Diablo III, this 2023 action RPG returns Sanctuary to the gothic dread that made Diablo II so memorable: blood-soaked villages, ruined chapels, plague-ridden swamps and a story that opens with Lilith, daughter of Mephisto and Mother of Sanctuary, summoned back into the world she helped create.
Her return sets her against the angel Inarius, and the hunt for her runs across five distinct regions: the snowbound Fractured Peaks, the coastal forests of Scosglen, the harsh Dry Steppes, the deserts of Kehjistan and the swamps of Hawezar. The storytelling is more cinematic than in any earlier Diablo, and the Horadric scholar Lorath makes a weary, memorable guide through it. Five classes take up the fight, the Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue and Sorcerer, each with a skill tree, Legendary Aspects that reshape abilities and, once the campaign is done, a sprawling Paragon Board for long-term builds.
Instead of linear acts, Sanctuary is one connected open world, crossed on horseback once you earn your mount and dotted with randomized dungeons, strongholds to reclaim, Helltide events and world bosses. Nightmare Dungeons push the challenge higher for endgame players, and the Fields of Hatred add player-versus-player zones for those who want them. The game was built around a shared, always-connected world, so other adventurers pass through towns and join the larger events.
On console it plays naturally on a controller, and local couch co-op for two on the same screen is a console-only feature that makes the Series X version a great way to share the campaign. It became Blizzard’s fastest-selling game at launch and has served as the foundation for years of seasons and expansion content since. Bosses such as the Butcher, who can ambush players in dungeons without warning, keep even familiar runs tense. This is the base game where all of that begins, and the Diablo that remembered the series was always meant to be a horror story.
