Item Description

Beneath the town of Tristram, the cathedral's lower levels sink through catacombs and caves all the way down to Hell itself, and Diablo dares you to go one more floor. Sixteen levels separate the town square from the Lord of Terror himself, and each one is darker and more dangerous than the last. Blizzard's dark action RPG reshaped the genre on PC in 1996, and this PlayStation conversion, handled by Climax Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 1998, brings that slow, dreadful descent to the couch.

You choose a Warrior, Rogue or Sorcerer and head down from the surface, surfacing between expeditions to trade with Griswold the blacksmith, buy potions from Pepin the healer and listen to Deckard Cain unravel the story of King Leoric's fall. The dungeons are randomly generated, the loot is randomized, and the set of quests changes from one game to the next, so no two descents play out the same way. Some encounters are impossible to forget, from the Butcher's blood-soaked chamber to the Skeleton King and the treacherous archbishop Lazarus.

The PlayStation version's standout feature is two-player co-op on a single screen, a way to play that the PC original never offered. It turns Diablo into a shared descent where one hero holds the line while the other casts or shoots from behind. The controls are rebuilt around the gamepad, with your character steered directly rather than clicked across the floor, and Matt Uelmen's haunting acoustic guitar theme for Tristram still sets the mood perfectly.

Diablo laid down the template action RPGs still follow: randomized dungeons, color-coded loot and a loop of fighting, upgrading and diving deeper that is very hard to put down. On PlayStation it gains a living-room identity all its own, and it is the way to experience Blizzard's original descent on Sony's first console, with a friend beside you on the sofa. It is also a more intimate, gothic affair than the sequels that followed, built around one cursed town and the single descent beneath it.

About the game

Diablo is an isometric strategy RPG and one of the most well-known examples of the action-RPG subgenre. Although some of the game mechanics resemble a typical RPG, all actions are done in real-time just like in an action game. The player have to kill hordes of monsters through randomized dungeon levels in order to gain experience points, gold and a variety of equipment to bolster the hero's monster-killing potency.
