Item Description

Few action games reward showing off the way Devil May Cry 5 does. Every combo is graded in real time, and as your style rank climbs from Dismal toward the coveted SSS, the battle music builds with you, layering in vocals and intensity until the whole fight feels like a music video you are directing. Capcom's director Hideaki Itsuno brought the series back after more than a decade away from a numbered entry, and it was worth the wait.

Red Grave City has been overrun by the Qliphoth, a monstrous demonic tree feeding on the city's people, and three hunters set out to stop the demon king Urizen. Nero, the hot-headed hero of Devil May Cry 4, has lost his demonic arm and fights with Devil Breakers, swappable prosthetic arms built by the irrepressible engineer Nico, each with its own tricks. V, a frail, poetry-reading newcomer, fights at a distance by commanding the demonic familiars Griffon, Shadow and Nightmare. And Dante is Dante, switching between combat styles mid-combo and wielding everything from a motorcycle that splits into twin buzzsaws to a hat that fires guns.

Three characters with three completely different ways to fight give the campaign remarkable variety, and the RE Engine gives it a striking, photorealistic look with character models and lighting the series had never had before. The soundtrack is a highlight in its own right, led by Nero's battle anthem "Devil Trigger" and Dante's "Subhuman", and the boss fights are some of the most cinematic in the genre. Higher difficulties and the Bloody Palace survival mode, added as a free update after launch, give dedicated players years of mastery to chase.

Devil May Cry 5 was a critical and commercial triumph that reestablished the series at the top of the character-action genre. On Xbox One, it is a fine way to own the game that brought Dante, Nero and the stylish-action formula roaring back to life.
