Item Description

Destiny 2 opens by taking everything away. Dominus Ghaul and his Red Legion, the war machine of the Cabal empire, tear through the Last City, cage the Traveler and strip the Guardians of the Light that made them nearly immortal. Bungie's 2017 sequel begins with your Guardian powerless and limping out of the ruins, and the climb back to strength is one of the best opening acts any online shooter has staged.

The Red War campaign sent players across four new destinations: the overgrown forests of the European Dead Zone, the storm-lashed methane seas of Titan, the Vex-transformed planetoid Nessus and Io, the moon where the Traveler last touched before its long sleep. Commander Zavala, Cayde-6 and Ikora Rey finally get room to breathe as characters, with Nathan Fillion's Cayde stealing nearly every scene. Patrol zones filled out with Public Events, Adventures and hidden Lost Sectors, and the Leviathan raid, staged aboard the exiled Emperor Calus's colossal ship, gave six-player fireteams a lavish endgame.

Bungie's gunplay is the heart of it, as crisp and weighty as anything the studio made in its Halo years. The sequel reorganized loadouts into Kinetic, Energy and Power slots, introduced new subclasses in the Warlock's Dawnblade, the Hunter's Arcstrider and the Titan's shield-throwing Sentinel, and moved the Crucible to tighter four-versus-four matches. Strikes, Nightfalls and the raid were all designed for cooperative fireteams, and the whole game was built from the ground up as an always-online shared world.

That online design meant Destiny 2 kept changing long after launch. It went free-to-play in 2019, and in 2020 Bungie removed the Red War campaign, Titan, Io and the Leviathan from the live game altogether. A launch-era release is a snapshot of how the saga's second chapter began, and the Limited Edition was one of the premium editions offered at release, a fitting keepsake for Guardians who answered Zavala's call in year one.
