A small floating machine voiced by Peter Dinklage pulls you back from death in the rusted ruins of Old Russia, and that is how millions of players first met Destiny. Bungie's first game after Halo, published by Activision, set out to fuse the studio's famously tight shooting with the persistent loot chase of an online RPG, all wrapped in a mythic science-fiction setting unlike anything it had built before.
The setting sells it. Humanity's golden age ended when the Darkness came for the Traveler, the vast silent sphere that now hangs over the Last City, humanity's final refuge. As a Guardian, a revived warrior wielding the Traveler's Light, you push back four alien races, the scavenging Fallen, the Hive burrowed beneath the Moon, the time-bending Vex and the militaristic Cabal, across Earth, the Moon, Venus and Mars. The skyboxes and concept art are breathtaking, and the score by Marty O'Donnell, Michael Salvatori and Paul McCartney gives the whole adventure a grand, choral sweep.
You choose a Titan, Hunter or Warlock and grow into subclasses with signature supers like the Hunter's Golden Gun and the Titan's Fist of Havoc. Story missions, three-player Strikes and Crucible PvP all feed the same arsenal of guns and armor, and the hunt for Exotics such as Gjallarhorn became a community obsession. The high point was the Vault of Glass, a six-player raid with no matchmaking, built around communication, timing and puzzle-like encounters, and a reference point for cooperative shooter design ever since.
The launch version also carried famous rough edges, from a threadbare story to Ghost's much-quoted line about a wizard who came from the moon, and Bungie spent the next three years reshaping it through The Dark Below, House of Wolves, The Taken King and Rise of Iron. Destiny was built as an always-online game, and on PS4 it represents the year-one foundation that the entire franchise grew from: the era of the loot cave, the Vault of Glass and Dinklage's original Ghost.
Bungie has emphasized that the universe of Destiny will be "alive". Events may happen in-game that are not necessarily controlled or planned by the developer, which will help to create a dynamic developing experience for Bungie and a dynamic playing experience for gamers. The game's style has been described a first-person shooter that will incorporate massively multiplayer online game (MMO) elements, but Bungie has avoided defining Destiny as a traditional MMO game. Instead, the game has been referred to as a "shared-world shooter," as it lacks many of the characteristics of a traditional MMO game. For instance, rather than players being able to see and interact with all other players in the game or on a particular server—as is the case in many conventional MMO games—Destiny will include on-the-fly matchmaking that will allow players to see and interact only with other players with whom they are "matched" by the game. Destiny will incorporate a new game engine that allows global illuminations and real-time dynamic lighting to occur together.
