Item Description
In Dungeons & Dragons, Avernus is the first layer of the Nine Hells, and this enchantment captures what a trip there feels like: everybody gets rich, and everybody gets hurt. At the beginning of your upkeep, Descent into Avernus gets two descent counters. Then each player creates a Treasure token for every counter on it, and it deals that much damage to each player.
The numbers escalate fast. On your first upkeep it's two Treasures and 2 damage for everyone, then four and 4, then six and 6. That turns a three-mana red enchantment into a game accelerator that rewards whoever is ready to cash in first: big Treasure payoffs, X spells, artifact-sacrifice synergies and life gain all tilt the race in your favor. At a four-player Commander table it's a guaranteed conversation starter and a reliable way to drag a slow game toward a dramatic finish.
This is the extended-art Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate printing, collector number 580, illustrated by Bruce Brenneise, in non-foil. The card's name nods to the D&D adventure Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus, which sends heroes from the city of Baldur's Gate down into the Nine Hells.
