Rob Fulop originally wanted to call it Death from Above, and the first wave makes the case. Stranded with a laser cannon on the frozen surface of the ice planet Krybor, you watch shimmering demons flap into view overhead, rain fire down on you and slip away from your shots. Imagic's marketing team settled on Demon Attack, and the game became the company's biggest seller and the third best-selling console game of 1982, behind only Pitfall! and Pac-Man.
What makes it look so alive is the art. Fulop worked with a dedicated graphic artist, Michael Becker, whose eight-phase animations give each demon a fluttering, shape-shifting motion a world away from the marching rows of Space Invaders. The waves escalate in personality as well as speed: from the fifth wave on, a hit demon can split into two smaller, bird-like creatures that swoop down at your cannon, and later waves bring long streams of laser fire that force you to read the pattern instead of just holding the button. The game variations add a Tracer Shot mode that lets you steer your laser after firing, plus a cooperative two-player mode in which the players trade control of moving and firing every few seconds, a delightfully chaotic way to share a couch.
Its success came with a fight. Atari, which held the home console rights to Taito's Phoenix, took Imagic to court over the resemblance, and a settlement in January 1983 let Demon Attack keep shipping. That year it won the Arkie Award for Video Game of the Year, and Fulop collected Billboard's designer of the year honor for it. The Intellivision adaptation added a mothership boss, but the 2600 original has the brighter, more colorful demons and the purest form of the wave-survival loop that made Imagic a name players went looking for on the shelf.
Demon Attack is an arcade action game with gameplay similar to Space Invaders. You control a laser cannon at the bottom of the screen, and need to destroy wave after wave of brightly colored demons. The demons bounce around the screen in bizarre patterns, and try to destroy your cannon with bombs or lasers. When you shoot a demon, it will be replaced with another or will split into two smaller demons depending on which wave you are playing. When the required number of demons for the current round is finally destroyed, you can move on to the next, more difficult round.
