Item Description

Someone points removal at your commander, and you send it somewhere else without spending a single mana. Deflecting Swat lets you choose new targets for target spell or ability, and if you control a commander, you can cast it for free. The kill spell aimed at your best creature can land on one of theirs instead.

It's red's member of the free-spell cycle from Commander 2020, and it gives red something the color rarely gets: real protection. Because it redirects abilities as well as spells, it also handles targeted triggers and activated abilities, and at zero mana it's available even after you've tapped out for a big turn. Without a commander out, three mana still buys a flexible instant, but the real fun is holding it up for free and watching someone's best answer backfire.

This is the Commander 2020 printing, collector number 50, illustrated by Izzy, in non-foil. Its flavor text spotlights Kalamax, the Stormsire, one of that year's commanders: "Archmage attacks are little more than annoyances to Kalamax."
