In 2013, Trion Worlds and Syfy set out to launch an online shooter and a weekly television drama in the same world at the same time, with each meant to feed into the other. Defiance was the game half of that experiment, and it is one of the most ambitious cross-media gambles of the Xbox 360 era.
The setting is a terraformed San Francisco Bay Area, about fifteen years after the Pale Wars between humanity and the alien Votans. You play an Ark Hunter, a mercenary scavenging valuable alien technology, guided by an EGO implant that grants a signature power such as a speed boost, cloaking or a holographic decoy. The combat is straight third-person shooting rather than the hotbar abilities most online role-playing games used at the time, and the show's leads, Joshua Nolan and Irisa, appear at the start of your story to anchor the game in the series' universe.
The big draw was the Arkfall: salvage from the alien fleet's wreckage raining down from orbit, pulling every nearby player into a spontaneous public battle over what landed. Reviews were mixed, with the Xbox 360 version landing around 60 on Metacritic, but the idea of a living world running alongside a TV schedule kept the game going for eight years, outlasting the show's three-season run.
Because Defiance was an online-only game, it cannot be played today. The Xbox 360 servers were switched off in May 2020, and the game closed on every platform in April 2021. That makes this disc an artifact rather than a playable game: a record of the moment when a publisher and a TV network believed a series and a game world could share one storyline, and a tangible piece of the show's universe for anyone collecting the 360's boldest online experiments.
