Item Description

Most superhero games try to make you feel like a hero. Deadpool would rather make you laugh, and High Moon Studios built an entire game around the Merc with a Mouth's habit of talking to the audience, mocking his own plot and wondering aloud whether the developers have run out of budget. Nolan North voices Wade Wilson with manic energy, and the script by Deadpool comic writer Daniel Way keeps the jokes coming from the first cutscene to the last.

The story starts with a simple contract on a corrupt media mogul and spirals from there. Mister Sinister steals Deadpool's kill, Deadpool swears revenge, and before long he is crashing into a much bigger scheme involving Sinister's Marauders and a pile of clones. Reluctant allies including Cable, Wolverine, Rogue and Domino get pulled in, mostly to be annoyed by him, and Death herself shows up as the object of his affections.

Under the comedy sits a fast, flashy action game. Deadpool chains katana slashes and hammer blows into gunfire from his pistols and heavier weapons, teleports out of danger, and spends the points he earns on new moves and upgrades. The levels keep throwing curveballs, too, from detours into retro 8-bit-style sequences to set pieces that break the fourth wall in ways no other licensed game would try. Critics found the combat solid rather than deep, but the humor and personality won it a loyal following.

Originally released in 2013, Deadpool was brought to Xbox One in 2015, giving the game a second life on the newer console. It is a snapshot of Marvel games before the character became a film star, made by a team that clearly loved the comics. For a crude, chaotic, self-aware action game with real affection for its source, there is nothing else quite like it on the system.

About the game

In Deadpool the player takes control of the loud-mouthed, foul-mouthed, merc-with-a-mouth Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool). While on out on a contract to kill a corrupt media mogul, Mister Sinister intervenes and kills him instead, drawing the ire of Deadpool who then vows revenge only to stumble upon a bigger plot which could spell the end of humanity. With the help of some of the X-Men such as Wolverine, Rogue and Domino along with a buddy from the future, Cable, they band together to stop Mister Sinister and his group of Marauders (Arclight, Blockbuster and Vertigo) from succeeding.
