Item Description

High Moon Studios' Deadpool, published by Activision in 2013, knows exactly what it is. The game opens in Wade Wilson's grubby apartment, where the Merc with a Mouth has phoned the developers to pitch his own video game, and the fourth wall never recovers. Deadpool argues with the voices in his head, mocks the script and talks straight to the player, all in the voice of Nolan North, who gives the character exactly the right mix of menace and nonsense.

Longtime Deadpool comics writer Daniel Way wrote the story, which sends Wade after a corrupt media mogul, only for Mister Sinister to steal the kill and earn a very personal grudge. The chase drags in Cable, Wolverine, Rogue and Domino, pits Deadpool against Sinister's clones and his Marauders, and leaves room for some shameless flirting with Death herself. The humor is crude, self-aware and frequently hilarious, and it lands because it sounds like the comics rather than an imitation of them.

Under the jokes is a third-person brawler built for chaos. Deadpool swaps freely between katanas, sai and hammers up close and pistols, shotguns and heavier hardware at range, teleports out of danger, and builds momentum through combos to unleash flashy finishers. Points earned in combat buy new moves, weapons and upgrades, and the game regularly interrupts itself with gags and detours that change the style of play entirely.

Reviews were mixed on the combat, but nearly everyone agreed the writing and performances nailed the character. Short, loud and very funny, it is one of the best showcases of Deadpool outside the comics, and this original Xbox 360 release arrived years before the character's big-screen breakout, back when the Merc with a Mouth was still a cult favorite with a video game all his own.

About the game

In Deadpool the player takes control of the loud-mouthed, foul-mouthed, merc-with-a-mouth Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool). While on out on a contract to kill a corrupt media mogul, Mister Sinister intervenes and kills him instead, drawing the ire of Deadpool who then vows revenge only to stumble upon a bigger plot which could spell the end of humanity. With the help of some of the X-Men such as Wolverine, Rogue and Domino along with a buddy from the future, Cable, they band together to stop Mister Sinister and his group of Marauders (Arclight, Blockbuster and Vertigo) from succeeding.
