Item Description

Jack Slate has about the worst week a cop can have. His father Frank turns up murdered, Jack is framed for a killing he did not commit and sent to Iron Point to wait for execution, and the corrupt power brokers of Grant City would very much like him to stay there. Dead to Rights takes that setup and plays it like a hard-boiled crime movie, with Jack breaking out and fighting his way through a city where the police, the mob and City Hall all seem to be on the same payroll.

The action wears its influences proudly. Namco's American studio built the gunplay around the slow-motion dives and two-fisted shootouts of Hong Kong action cinema and the bullet-time craze of the early 2000s, and then layered on disarm moves that let Jack rip a weapon out of a thug's hands and turn it on him in one brutal motion. When the ammo runs dry there is hand-to-hand brawling, and the game keeps changing gears with lock picking and minigames such as arm wrestling, bench pressing and dancing.

The real star might be Shadow, Jack's K-9 partner. On command he charges an enemy, takes him down and trots back with whatever the man was carrying, all governed by a meter that refills as you fight, which makes him a tactical tool rather than a gimmick. A couple of sections even hand you direct control of the dog, sneaking him through areas Jack cannot reach.

Dead to Rights launched first on Xbox in 2002 and reached the GameCube later that year, bringing its hard-boiled action to Nintendo players. It also kicked off a series that ran through Dead to Rights II, the PSP's Reckoning and 2010's Retribution. On a console best remembered for Mario and Zelda, it is a gritty, unapologetically grown-up shooter and a bracing change of pace from the rest of the library.
