Three days, one shopping mall and an awful lot of zombies. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop sends photojournalist Frank West into Willamette Parkview Mall in Colorado with seventy-two hours to rescue survivors and get to the bottom of the outbreak before the helicopter that brought him returns. It is Capcom's mall-crawling cult hit, reshaped for the Wii into something leaner and more action-driven than the Xbox 360 game that inspired it.
Rather than attempt a straight port, Tose rebuilt Dead Rising on the engine behind Resident Evil 4, and it shows. The camera sits over Frank's shoulder, guns take a much bigger role, and aiming with the Wii Remote pointer gives every shot the same quick, satisfying feel that made Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition such a natural fit for the console. The structure is tighter too, built around a sequence of missions instead of the original's strict open-ended clock, which makes it easier to play in shorter sessions.
The anarchic spirit survives. The mall is still full of things you were never meant to fight with, from sporting goods to store furniture, and the game's dark sense of humor carries over in its improvised weapons and in the unhinged human psychopaths who turn up as boss encounters. Leading frightened survivors through crowds of the undead is still a tense balancing act between greed for rescues and simple survival.
Chop Till You Drop arrived in 2009 during the Wii's push toward mature third-party games, and critics found it a mixed bag next to the 360 original, largely because the hardware could not match that version's enormous zombie crowds. Taken on its own terms, it is a fascinating alternate take on Frank West's debut, and a rewarding curiosity for Dead Rising collectors who want to see how Capcom translated its sandbox into a pointer-driven shooter.

Dead Rising: Chop Till you Drop is an adaptation of Dead Rising, for the Wii. The freelance photojournalist Frank West investigates a zombie outbreak in Willamette, Colorado. He has three days at the mall to rescue survivors and solve the case before the helicopter that dropped him off returns. The basic outlines are maintained from the Xbox 360 game, but numerous changes have been made to fit the game into the Resident Evil 4 engine and to accommodate the Wii's graphical capabilities and very different controller.
