Item Description

The King of Cheshire is dead, the Dark Wizard Velonese is marshaling his demon generals, and you have just inherited the job of holding the kingdom together. Dark Wizard is one of the Sega CD's most substantial original games, a hex-map tactical RPG developed by Sega and directed by Kenji Terada, the writer behind the scenarios of the first three Final Fantasy games.

What sets it apart is the choice of hero. You pick one of four leaders, each with different attributes, abilities and armies at their command: Prince Armer IX, the cavalry leader Robin, the sorceress Krystal, or Amon, a vampire. Their stories run largely independently of one another, so finishing the campaign once only shows you part of the game. Battles play out turn by turn across hex grids, where magic, recruited units and careful positioning decide who holds the field, and between engagements you can send characters into towns and villages for side adventures.

The backstory runs deep for a console game of its day. Three centuries earlier, a high priest summoned the dark god Arliman, and the high wizard Gilliam sealed it inside a magical jewel. Velonese, Gilliam's top apprentice, was cursed with immortality for practicing forbidden spells and banished to the Island of Raven to guard that jewel, until Arliman's essence corrupted him into the villain you now have to stop.

Dark Wizard used the CD format for animated cinemas and an orchestrated soundtrack, yet GamePro praised it most for avoiding the trap so many Sega CD games fell into, putting substance and depth ahead of video. For strategy fans raised on Shining Force and Warsong, it is the Sega CD's answer to the big army-building campaigns of the 16-bit era, with four separate stories to conquer.

These are epic times for the people of Cheshire. The kingdom of Quentin is the last stronghold in all of Cheshire against the forces of darkness. But Quentin's king has been killed in battle. Cheshire desperately needs a successor to come forward and lead the warriors of light against the forces of darkness and, eventually, against the Dark Wizard himself. If you fail, darkness will rule Cheshire - forever!
