Halfway through the very first boss fight, Iudex Gundyr's body bursts into a writhing black mass, and Dark Souls III makes its intentions clear. Gundyr is only the entrance exam. Beyond the Cemetery of Ash, FromSoftware has laid out a long, brutal and gorgeous road, and this closing chapter of the Dark Souls trilogy, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and published by Bandai Namco, plays like the work of a studio fully confident in everything it learned from Demon's Souls, the first two Dark Souls games and Bloodborne.
You are the Ashen One, an Unkindled warrior risen from an ashen grave with a single task: drag the Lords of Cinder back to their thrones so the First Flame can be linked once more. The lords have other ideas. Hunting them leads from the battlements of the High Wall of Lothric through the frozen cathedral city of Irithyll of the Boreal Valley to the Profaned Capital, where the giant Yhorm waits. The Abyss Watchers turn on one another as fiercely as they turn on you, Aldrich has been devouring gods, and Pontiff Sulyvahn guards Irithyll with two blades and very little mercy. Firelink Shrine, with its quiet Fire Keeper and a growing cast of merchants and smiths, is the hub you keep fighting your way back to.
Combat is noticeably quicker than in earlier Dark Souls games, with a little of Bloodborne's aggression in its rolls and recoveries. Weapon Arts give each armament its own stance or technique, fueled by a new FP gauge, and the Estus Flask can be split between healing and Ashen Estus for spellcasting. Every weapon, ring and armor set invites experimentation, and the build possibilities are enormous. The game was also designed around the series' famous asynchronous online layer: messages scrawled on the ground, bloodstains replaying other players' deaths, summon signs for co-op and the ever-present threat of invasion.
A score by Yuka Kitamura, Motoi Sakuraba and others gives fights like the Dancer of the Boreal Valley and the Nameless King an operatic weight, and the return to a decaying Anor Londo is a deliberate gift to longtime players. Everything builds toward a final duel with the Soul of Cinder that lands as a melancholy, fitting farewell to the whole trilogy. On PS4, Dark Souls III is the most polished Souls game of its generation, and the clearest answer to why an entire genre is now called Soulslike.
Dark Souls III is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released in March 2016, it is the fourth entry in the Souls series and the final instalment in the Dark Souls trilogy. Set in the decaying kingdom of Lothric, players take on the role of the "Ashen One," an undead warrior tasked with rekindling the First Flame to prevent the world from falling into darkness. The game features challenging combat, intricate level design, and a deep, lore-rich narrative.
