Item Description

Majula is where Dark Souls II lets you breathe: a sunlit village on a seaside cliff, a lone bonfire, and the Emerald Herald waiting to turn your souls into strength. Everything else in Drangleic wants you dead. Scholar of the First Sin is FromSoftware's 2015 expanded edition of the game, bringing the original release together with all three Crown expansions and reworking the kingdom enough that even veterans of the 2014 version find themselves ambushed in places they thought they knew.

The changes go deeper than a bundle. Enemy and item placement were rearranged across the map, so familiar routes play differently, and a new character, Aldia, the Scholar of the First Sin, appears along the journey with dialogue that recasts the story of King Vendrick, Queen Nashandra and the curse of the Undead. Underneath is classic Souls: deliberate, stamina-driven combat, bonfires that bring enemies back each time you rest, and a hollowing system that shaves your maximum health with every death until a Human Effigy restores you. Dark Souls II added wrinkles of its own, including power stancing to fight with two weapons at once and the Bonfire Ascetic, which raises the difficulty of a single area for another round of rewards.

The Crown trilogy is where Drangleic is at its best. Crown of the Sunken King descends into the buried city of Shulva, Crown of the Old Iron King climbs the ash-choked Brume Tower, and Crown of the Ivory King crosses the frozen city of Eleum Loyce. Those three expansions hold some of the series' most demanding fights, including Sinh the Slumbering Dragon, the Fume Knight, Sir Alonne and the Burnt Ivory King, and they are a big part of why so many players rank this edition as the definitive way to experience the game.

Dark Souls II has always been the most debated entry in the trilogy, stranger and more sprawling than its siblings, and its defenders love it for exactly that: the sheer number of weapons and builds, the gloom of No-Man's Wharf and the Iron Keep, the eerie quiet of the Shrine of Amana. On the Xbox 360, Scholar of the First Sin was the last and most complete release of the game for the console generation, and it is the version of Drangleic worth keeping on the shelf: every expansion, every rearranged ambush and Aldia's added lore in one package.
