Item Description

The ground gives way in the middle of a firefight, and soldiers from both sides of a war tumble into the dark together. That is the moment House of Ashes turns from a military thriller into something much older and hungrier. The third chapter of Supermassive Games' Dark Pictures Anthology, published by Bandai Namco in 2021, is set in Iraq in 2003, where a US team searching the Zagros Mountains for hidden weapons is ambushed and swallowed by an earthquake into a buried Akkadian temple, alongside the Iraqi officer they were fighting minutes earlier.

Five characters are playable, and any of them can die. Rachel King, played by Ashley Tisdale, her estranged husband Eric, the hard-edged Lieutenant Jason Kolchek, the easygoing Sergeant Nick Kay and Lieutenant Salim Othman of the Iraqi Republican Guard all carry their own grudges into the tunnels, and the most interesting choices are about whether these enemies can learn to trust each other while something ancient hunts them through the stone corridors. Quick-time events, dialogue decisions and split-second moral calls ripple forward through the story, so two playthroughs can end with very different survivors.

Supermassive also gave this entry a fully controllable camera for the first time in the anthology, which makes exploring the temple feel far less like watching a film and more like creeping through it yourself. The Curator, Pip Torrens's sly host who watches over every Dark Pictures story, is back between chapters with his hints and needling commentary. The game was built for company as well: Movie Night passes the controller around a room of up to five players, each taking a character, and the Shared Story mode was designed for two players online.

With its Aliens-meets-war-movie energy and a creature design that leans into pure monster horror rather than ghosts or curses, House of Ashes is widely regarded as the strongest of the anthology's first three stories. It is the one to reach for when a group wants a horror night that ends in an argument about who should have lived.
