Item Description
Before Team Rocket, Charizard was the hero of every binder. Then the 2000 Team Rocket expansion handed Pokémon over to the villains and introduced Dark Pokémon, and Dark Charizard became the face of that mischievous turn. It's still one of the most recognizable cards of the original Wizards of the Coast era.
On the table, it is a Stage 2 Fire Pokémon with 80 HP that evolves from Dark Charmeleon. Nail Flick, for one Colorless Energy, does 10 damage. Continuous Fireball, for two Fire Energy, has you flip a coin for each Fire Energy card attached and does 50 damage times the number of heads, then discards that many Fire Energy cards. Load it up and every flip becomes a gamble with a huge payoff, which captures the reckless, out-of-control feel the set was going for. It is weak to Water, resists Fighting by 30, and has a Retreat Cost of three.
This is the Team Rocket printing, collector number 21/82, illustrated by Ken Sugimori, in non-foil. Its Pokédex entry sets the mood: “Seemingly possessed, it spews fire like a volcano, trying to burn all it sees.”
