Dante's first act in this story is to defeat Death himself and take his scythe. It sets the tone for everything after. Visceral Games, the studio behind Dead Space, took the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and recast its poet as a Crusader knight who comes home to find Beatrice, the woman he loves, murdered and her soul dragged into hell by Lucifer. With the shade of the poet Virgil as his guide, Dante follows her down through all nine circles, carrying the guilt of his own sins stitched in a cross across his chest.
Combat is fast, brutal and built on combos, running at 60 frames per second. The stolen scythe handles heavy melee work, Beatrice's holy cross gives Dante a ranged attack, and mana-fueled spells round out the toolkit. The clever twist is what happens to the souls you meet: you can punish or absolve the damned, including famous figures drawn from the poem, and those choices feed two separate upgrade paths, Holy and Unholy, so your Dante grows in the direction you push him.
The descent is where the game's imagination shows. Limbo ends at the throne of King Minos, Lust brings a towering Cleopatra and Mark Antony, Gluttony is ruled by the three-headed Cerberus, and Greed forces a confrontation with Dante's own father. Anger has you riding the giant boatman Phlegyas across a burning swamp, and the circle of Fraud turns into the Malebolge, a gauntlet of combat challenges stacked one after another, before the frozen depths of Treachery and Lucifer himself. Garry Schyman's choral score gives the whole journey a grim, operatic weight.
Reviewers at the time leaned hard on comparisons to God of War, and the influence is plain, but the grotesque art direction and the strangeness of its literary source give Dante's Inferno an identity of its own. The Divine Edition was EA's PlayStation 3-exclusive version of the launch release, offered at the regular price and promoted with digital bonus material for fans, including developer commentary and an art book of Wayne Barlowe's designs. It is a cult favorite of the PS3 era, and a rare action game willing to take a 700-year-old poem as its blueprint.
Dante's Inferno is an epic single player, third-person action adventure game inspired by "Inferno", part one of Dante Alighieri's classic Italian poem, "The Divine Comedy." Featuring nonstop action rendered at 60 frames-per-second, signature and upgradable weapons, attack combos and mana-fueled spells and the choice of punishing or absolving the souls of defeated enemies, it is a classic Medieval tale of the eternal conflict with sin and the resulting horrors of hell, adapted for a new generation and a new medium.
